The Funky Cichlid is a fabulous backpackers lodge on the banks of Lake Malawi in a small village called Cape Maclear. There are endless opportunities for sunshine, happiness and good times at this little slice of backpacking heaven.
Basically our Eden for 4 days.
Favourite hostel in Malawi!
Best Place to chill out.
A 6-hours drive away from South Luangwa you will find the perfect place to lean back, indulge yourself in the memories of your great Safaris in the African Bush, while sipping on your ice-cold beer and watching some fishing boats collecting their catch before the sunset transforms the sky into the most amazing colors.
The Funky Chichlid is well known for its delicious “Fish Curry” which is made from Kampango. Back at our hostel, I received a cooking lesson by the chefs. Samson and James taught me how to cook “Fish Curry”. You are interested in the recipe and also want to get know a few of the super friendly Malawians?
The Funky Cichlid was the perfect spot for our first night at the lake and provided an amazing atmosphere to enjoy a few brandies overlooking the moonshine on the peaceful water. We also enjoyed a mega game of volleyball on the beach.
For the first few nights we camped at The Funky Cichlid, a chilled lodge/beach bar with amazing staff. The gentle waves, clean turquoise waters, selection of restaurants and boating activities were more than enough to fill the days. We even took a boat tour to the nearby islands to swim with the cichlids and watch the fish eagles feed.
Food is always part of a culture. During my stay in Malawi, I met Samson, a local chef at my favourite hostel at Cape Maclear, “The Funky Cichild”. I was fortunate enough to enjoy Samson´s Fish Curry, as well as, getting a brief on the stable food in Malawi, which is Nsima and fish.
One of those cool backpacker-hippie vibe sort of place. Perfect place for some delicious fish curry and a Sundowner
Definitely have added Malawi to the top of my favorite countries list! Who knew there was a tropical paradise in the heart of Africa?!
